Leaders from India and Pakistan have extended congratulatory messages to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its acting chairman Tarique Rahman following the party’s sweeping victory in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday conveyed her greetings through a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

In her message, Banerjee said she congratulated the people of Bangladesh and extended advance wishes for Ramadan. She also congratulated “Tarique bhai,” his party and other political parties on the massive electoral victory, wishing happiness and well-being for all.

She further expressed hope that the longstanding cordial relations between Bangladesh and India would continue in the days ahead.

Earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Tarique Rahman in a post on X.

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Tarique Rahman for leading the BNP towards a clear victory in Bangladesh’s national parliamentary election,” Modi wrote.

He said the victory reflected the trust of the Bangladeshi people in Rahman’s leadership and reaffirmed that India would continue to support a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh.

Expressing interest in working with the new government, Modi added that he looked forward to strengthening the multifaceted bilateral relationship and advancing shared development goals.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Pakistan also sent a congratulatory message, praising the successful conduct of the election and congratulating the people of Bangladesh.

He said Pakistan was keen to further strengthen the historically rooted, brotherly and multidimensional bilateral ties between the two countries.

Expressing willingness to engage with the new government, the Pakistani premier said he looked forward to working closely with Bangladesh’s new leadership to advance shared objectives for peace, stability and development in South Asia and beyond.
