Jamaat-e-Islami Amer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has warned that while he is prepared to give his life for the country, he will not allow the rights of the people to be infringed upon.

He made the remarks on Thursday at an election rally of the 11-party alliance held in front of Petro Bangla in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman said, “Due to extortion, prices rise fourfold from farmers to consumers. Farmers do not receive fair prices, and all parties suffer losses. From 13 February, the situation in Bangladesh will change. We will neither engage in extortion nor allow anyone else to do so.”

Responding to BNP chairman Tarique Rahman’s comment on why two Jamaat ministers did not resign during the party’s ‘championship of corruption’, he said, “The three ministries survived corruption, which is why the Jamaat leaders did not resign from their ministerial positions.”

He reiterated that the political landscape of Bangladesh would change after the 13 February, following the 13th general parliamentary elections on 12 February.

Addressing the recent killing of a Jamaat leader in Sherpur in an attack allegedly by BNP supporters, he warned, “It is currently the full month of Magh. If heads are so hot now, what will happen in Chaitra? Nothing can be achieved by force.”

After the Karwan Bazar rally, the Jamaat Amir is scheduled to participate in election campaigns in Mirpur and Banani Maidan later in the afternoon.
