Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have uncovered a counterfeit currency factory operating from a rented house in Gazipur’s Tongi area, raising fresh concerns over the circulation of fake money and its potential impact on the economy.

RAB-1 said three people were arrested during a late-night operation in Tongi’s Banomala area, carried out following a tip-off and setting a trap.

Authorities said the factory had been producing counterfeit banknotes for a long period.

More than Tk500,000 worth of counterfeit notes in various denominations were seized from the suspects, along with specialised currency paper, printers, scanners, ink and a laptop, according to RAB.

The recovery suggests a well-organised and technologically equipped operation.

The detainees admitted during preliminary questioning that they were involved in the production and supply of fake notes, RAB said.

Investigators are examining whether more individuals are linked to the network.

Lieutenant Commander Md Nafiz Bin Jamal (S), BN, company commander of the Porabari, Gazipur Camp of RAB-1, said counterfeit currency poses a serious threat to the country’s financial system and public confidence.

RAB said operations against counterfeit money syndicates would continue as authorities step up efforts to curb illicit activities that undermine economic stability and security.
