The BNP has reached an electoral seat-sharing agreement with the religion-based political party Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam Bangladesh, allocating four parliamentary seats to the party.

The announcement came at a joint press conference held on Tuesday afternoon at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office.

Speaking at the briefing, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also announced the names of BNP-nominated candidates for the remaining constituencies.

Mirza Fakhrul said the BNP has finalised an electoral understanding with Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam, under which the party will contest four seats. According to the decision, Junaid Al Habib will contest from Brahmanbaria-2, Ubaidullah Faruk from Sylhet-5, Monir Hossain Kasemi from Narayanganj-4, and Manjurul Islam Afendi from Nilphamari-1.

He further alleged that a certain group is obstructing the country’s democratic transition, and blamed the government’s failure for what he described as a severe deterioration in the law and order situation.

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said there will be no BNP candidates in the constituencies allocated to Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam, and likewise, Jamiat will not field candidates in seats where BNP nominees contest under the party’s electoral symbol.
