Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to five years in prison for misusing her power to obtain a 10-katha plot in the capital’s Purbachal New Town project.
The Dhaka Special Judge’s Court on Monday delivered the verdict in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over the allocation of six plots — each measuring 10 kathas — under the Purbachal New Town Project.
The court also handed down a seven-year rigorous imprisonment sentence to her sister, Sheikh Rehana. Her daughter, Tulip Siddiq, received two years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Tk 1 lakh. In default of payment, she will have to serve an additional term.
Seventeen people were accused in the case, including Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana and Tulip Rizwana Siddiq. Others named were former state minister for housing and public works Sharif Ahmed, as well as 14 officials from the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, RAJUK and the Prime Minister’s Office.
Tulip’s brother, Radwan Mujib Siddiq, and Azmira Siddiq Ruponti were not made accused in this particular case. They are facing separate charges in two different cases.
The court also sentenced RAJUK and public works officials to five years’ imprisonment each. They were fined Tk 1 lakh, with an additional six months’ imprisonment in case of non-payment.
According to the case documents, the ACC launched an investigation last December into allegations that six plots — totalling 60 kathas — in the Purbachal project were allocated irregularly. The inquiry began after Sheikh Hasina left the country on 5 August amid a mass uprising.
