A moderate earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale shook Dhaka and several other parts of the country again on Saturday evening, less than 24 hours after the previous quake.

The tremor was felt at 6:04pm, marking the second quake of the day in the capital.

Earlier, a 3.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Dhaka at 10:36:12am on Saturday.

Both tremors were aftershocks of Friday’s earthquake, confirmed Rubayet Kabir, acting in-charge of the Earthquake Research Centre.

He said the morning quake originated in Palash of Narsingdi, identifying it as an aftershock of Friday’s tremor felt in Madhabdi.

“Aftershocks can occur 10–20 km away from the original epicentre. So today’s quake also happened close to yesterday’s source,” he said.

Warning of a potential major earthquake, Rubayet added, “Dhaka has not experienced such a quake in the last 100 years. Friday’s event indicates we are in a high-risk situation.”

On Friday at 10:38:26am, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Dhaka and surrounding regions, with the epicentre in Madhabdi, Narsingdi. At least 10 people were reported dead and several hundred injured.
