National Citizens’ Party (NCP) Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary on Wednesday said that the movement led by eight political parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, is just and logical.
Speaking at the launch of the Joint Platform of Health Professionals and Students at Dhaka Reporters Unity, Patwary said, “I believe the eight parties, including Jamaat, will return home only after achieving their goals. The referendum will take place in Bangladesh — even if BNP waits 100 years, they won’t be able to stop it.”
Criticizing the BNP, he alleged that the party is engaged in extortion and litigation. “It’s being heard that Awami League’s cases will be withdrawn. In fact, most of those cases were already settled over the past year in exchange for money — as Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir himself admitted. BNP’s only achievements in the past year are extortion and case trading. Will they seek votes from people with these so-called successes?” he asked.
Calling for political reform, the NCP leader said, “We wanted reform to free the nation from fascist rule, but one party has abandoned that path. A large section of the new generation wants reform. People want to exercise their voting rights — that must be respected.”
He urged BNP to return to the path of reform, saying, “Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia understood the pulse of the people — that’s why they could lead the country. But the current BNP leadership is disconnected from public sentiment. I call on them to put aside their ego and embrace reform.”
Criticizing the government, Patwary said, “The biggest crisis today is the gap between the state, the people, and the government. The Yunus government has grown isolated from citizens and started walking alone. Police are assaulting protesting teachers, doctors, and nurses. Now everyone is asking: do we need reform or not? A fascist system cannot run a country.”
He added that the government’s main responsibility should be to ensure the rights of those long deprived. “Holding office means understanding and addressing the people’s demands. I urge the government to provide a proper health framework for citizens.”
Referring to Awami League’s planned lockdown, he said, “We’ve heard Awami League will enforce a lockdown tomorrow. All parties will be on the streets. To resist Awami League’s violence, Hasnat Abdullah alone is enough.”
