BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman has said that while the groundwork for establishing a government accountable to the people is being prepared, some political parties are taking advantage of the interim government’s “weaknesses” to act against the will of the people.
He urged those parties not to threaten the “weak” government but rather to face the people in February next year national election.
Tarique made the remarks while addressing a discussion marking the Revolution and Solidarity Day at the China-Bangladesh Friendship Conference Centre in the capital on Wednesday.
“The country’s economic situation is deteriorating day by day. To get the economy back on track, a government elected with the people’s mandate is essential,” Tarique said.
He accused some political parties of creating obstacles to the upcoming election by setting various conditions.
“By doing so, they are paving the way for state privileges and the rehabilitation of fallen fugitives,” he alleged.
The BNP leader also said it is time to see whether the so-called anti-fascist forces are sheltering fugitive autocrats under their umbrella.
He cautioned against any move to use the guise of a referendum to rehabilitate fallen autocrats in state or social structures.
Speaking at the same event, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the crisis that has emerged in the country is an unnecessary one.
He alleged that the crisis was deliberately created to obstruct the path of democratic progress and make the nation’s future uncertain.
