Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman on Wednesday announced his resignation from office to contest in the upcoming national elections, seeking nomination from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

He made the announcement at a press conference held at the Attorney General’s Office in the afternoon.

Asaduzzaman said he has sought BNP’s nomination to contest from the Jhenaidah-1 constituency.

Making explosive remarks about the abolition of the caretaker government system and former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque’s role, the outgoing attorney general alleged that the verdict scrapping the system was delivered to benefit a particular political party.

Since the abolition of the caretaker government, people have not been able to cast their votes freely. If the caretaker system is reinstated, that judgment will remain unique in history,” he said.

Asaduzzaman added that any provision ensuring people’s voting rights and strengthening democracy cannot be considered contrary to the basic structure of the Constitution.
