Three people were beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of cattle theft in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha early Sunday.
The incident took place in a village near a local shrine around 2:30 am, according to police and local sources.
Locals said a group of men broke into a cowshed in the village during the night, attempting to steal cattle and load them onto a pickup truck. Sensing the theft, villagers chased the suspected thieves. In an attempt to flee, the men reportedly jumped into a nearby jungle and later into a pond.
They were caught and beaten by the mob, leaving two dead on the spot. Another injured man was taken to Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex, where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
On information, Superintendent of Police Nishat Angela, Gobindaganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bulbul Islam, and the local union parishad chairman visited the scene.
OC Bulbul Islam confirmed the incident, saying the bodies have been kept at the police station and efforts are underway to identify the deceased.
