Narayanganj, Nov 1 – Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP’s Standing Committee, has criticised a political party for attempting to exploit Islam for political gains.
Speaking at the ‘Azmat-e-Sahaba’ grand conference held at the central Eidgah grounds in Narayanganj on Saturday afternoon, he emphasised that proper and principled politics is necessary to eradicate unprincipled political culture from the country.
In Bangladesh, Salahuddin said, attempts to use Islam for political advantage, particularly before elections, are frequently observed, and such practices appear to have increased recently.
A political party is trying to use Islam in the context of elections and politics to create divisions among the nation and to harm Islam itself,” he said.
Highlighting the country’s Muslim majority, Salahuddin said, “Between 90 and 92 per cent of our population are Muslims. We follow the practices of Islam as taught in Madinah and adhere to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). We do not follow the ideology of Maududi. Therefore, we must be cautious of those who attempt to create discord and confusion among Muslims in the country.”
Salahuddin also criticised the ruling Awami League government, accusing it of practising an Islamophobic, anti-cleric, and anti-Muslim politics.
We have witnessed how their tenure ended,” he said, calling for the establishment of a new Bangladesh through principled politics, the promotion of ideal political practices, and the cultivation of a healthy political culture, which, he believes, will eliminate unprincipled politics from the country.
