A strong smell of gas in the air has sparked concern among residents in several parts of the capital since Saturday night.

People from areas including Kuril, Bashundhara, Matikata Gate, Uttara, Ashkona, Bhasantek and Dakshinkhan reported sensing a distinct gas odor in the atmosphere.

However, Titas Gas authorities have urged people not to panic, assuring that there is no reason for alarm.

AHM Mahmudur Rahman, Deputy General Manager (Public Relations) of Titas Gas, said that pipeline maintenance work is currently underway in various parts of Dhaka.

As part of the repair process, a certain chemical substance is used in the pipelines, which may cause such odors,” he explained.

He added that a gas leak in any area could also lead to a similar smell.

Titas has advised residents to immediately contact its helpline if they notice a gas odor in their area. The emergency response team will arrive promptly to take necessary action, the company said.
