After 10 consecutive days of demonstrations, non-government MPO-listed teachers and employees have announced the withdrawal of their protest programme.
The decision came following the government’s issuance of a gazette increasing their house rent allowance by 15 per cent.
The teachers said they accepted the government’s decision and would return to classrooms, while continuing discussions over their remaining demands.
Following days of sit-ins, demonstrations and hunger strikes, the agitating teachers and employees declared that they would now resume their duties at their respective institutions.
On Tuesday (21 October), teachers expressed joy at the Central Shaheed Minar after the government issued the notification of the 15 per cent rise in house rent allowance. They voiced optimism that the government would meet their other legitimate demands in the future as well.
At a formal press conference, teacher leaders said they would continue classes even on Saturday to compensate for the academic losses of students. They also mentioned that discussions with the government would continue regarding the increase in festival allowances for employees.
Professor Delwar Hossain Azizi, member secretary of the MPO-Listed Teachers’ Nationalisation Demand Alliance, said, “We have withdrawn our movement. From tomorrow, we will return to the classrooms.”
Teacher leaders also extended their gratitude to all who expressed solidarity with their 10-day protest, which centred on three major demands.
