Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has undertaken a major tree plantation drive to plant 91,000 ornamental trees along 33 road medians stretching a total of 31 kilometers across the city.
DSCC Administrator Shahjahan Mia inaugurated the programme on Saturday by planting trees on the median of Mirpur Road.
Under the “Zero Soil” initiative, the beautification and greening activities are being implemented in two phases. DSCC will plant trees on 28 medians while the Forest Department will cover the remaining five.
As part of the plan, a total of 10,645 ornamental flower plants — including Radachura, Bougainvillea, Tagar, Sheuli, Korobi, Cherry, Bakul, Sonalu, Tikuma, Jarul and Musenda — will be planted.
In addition, 81,100 hedge plants such as Mini Tagar, Rang Chita and Mini Rangan will be used as borders on both sides of the medians. The entire stretch will also feature Bermuda grass, lawn grass, Ivy and Odelia to ensure lush greenery.
In the first phase, Shahjahan Mia inaugurated and inspected tree plantation on medians of Mirpur Road, Abdul Gani Road, Shaheed Captain Mansur Ali Sarani, the stretch from City College to Shimanto Square, and Shaheed Farhan Faiyaz Sarak.
Speaking on the occasion, the DSCC Administrator said the initiative aims to enhance the city’s beauty and help reduce environmental pollution.
He noted that the programme is being carried out by DSCC in association with the Forest Department under the overall guidance of the Advisors to the ministries of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, as well as Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md. Zahirul Islam, Secretary Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, and Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md. Mahbubur Rahman Talukdar, among others, were present at the inauguration.
