Bollywood’s most recognisable voices Arijit Singh surprised fans worldwide at the very start of the new year by announcing his decision to step away from playback singing for films.

In a social media post shared on Monday, the singer said he would no longer accept new film-song assignments, calling it the end of a remarkable chapter in his career.

“Hello, Happy New Year to all. I want to thank you all for giving me so much love all these years as listeners. I am happy to announce that I am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey,” he wrote.

The announcement quickly went viral, leaving admirers stunned and emotional.
