A vessel carrying 62,150 metric tonnes of wheat from the United States has arrived at the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port on Friday, officials said.
The ship, MV Ubon Naree, brought the wheat under a government-to-government (G2G) deal signed between Bangladesh and the United States, according to the Ministry of Food.
The consignment was imported under contract G2G-03, officials added.
Earlier, the first shipment under the same agreement delivered 58,457 metric tonnes of wheat to the country.
Sampling and testing of the wheat onboard the vessel have already begun, and necessary steps are being taken to ensure quick unloading of the cargo.
Of the total consignment, 37,290 metric tonnes will be unloaded at Chattogram port, while the remaining 24,860 metric tonnes will be discharged at Mongla port.
Officials said Bangladesh has so far imported a total of 467,884 metric tonnes of wheat under earlier G2G agreements, 237,845 tonnes under G2G-01 and 230,039 tonnes under G2G-02.
Bangladesh’s annual wheat demand stands at around 7 million metric tonnes, while domestic production is estimated at about 1 million tonnes. The remaining demand is met through imports by both the government and private sector, officials added.
