The newly promulgated Cyber Security Ordinance-2025 has introduced stringent penalties for involvement in online gambling, fraud, and deception, stipulating up to two years’ imprisonment, a maximum fine of Tk 1 crore, or both.
According to the ordinance, any individual, institution, or entity that creates, operates, or participates in portals, apps, or devices for gambling purposes in cyberspace—or assists, encourages, or promotes gambling—will be deemed to have committed a punishable offense.
Participation in or promotion of online gambling through social media platforms including Facebook, Google, YouTube, WhatsApp, Twitter, and TikTok has also been brought under the purview of the law.
Section 20 of the ordinance prescribes a maximum punishment of two years’ imprisonment or a fine not exceeding Tk 1 crore, or both, for such offenses.
Additionally, the High Court Division has issued directives for effective measures to curb online gambling.
In the public interest, relevant authorities have been instructed to block, remove, or shut down all gateways, applications, links, websites, and advertisements related to online gambling across electronic, print, and social media platforms.
