A total of 6,033 kilowatt-peak (kWp) of electricity will be generated from solar power at the service areas of Padma Bridge, as Bangladesh Bridge Authority has signed an agreement this week with a private company to implement the project within six months.

The Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) recently carried out a feasibility survey on solar power generation at Padma Bridge.

According to the study, Service Area-1 has the capacity to produce 1,966 kWp, Service Area-2 about 2,948 kWp, and Service Area-3 around 1,119 kWp—making a total generation potential of 6,033 kWp.

To utilize this potential, the Bridge Authority, under the directive of Adviser to the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, signed a Tk 23.58 crore agreement with Omera Renewable Energy Limited.

Chief Engineer of Bangladesh Bridge Authority Kazi Md Ferdous and Chief Executive Officer of Omera Renewable Energy Limited Masudur Rahman signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations.

As per the deal, installation of the solar systems will be completed within six months, by March 14, 2026.

Under the Renewable Energy Policy 2025, the government has set a target of meeting 20 percent of total power demand from renewable sources by 2030, and 30 percent by 2040.

In line with this goal, the Power Division has introduced the ‘National Rooftop Solar Programme’ to prioritize renewable energy and strengthen energy security. The installation of solar systems at Padma Bridge service areas is part of this initiative, the Bridge Authority said.

It also noted that the electricity billing will be adjusted through the net metering system, which will help reduce overall costs.
