Police have claimed that the mystery surrounding the murder of Ishayat Shahriar Apratim (13), only son of Nahida Begum, an associate professor in the Department of Bangla at Cumilla University, has largely been unravelled.
Police will provide details at a press briefing at noon today (Sunday).
A district police official, speaking to Prothom Alo on condition of anonymity on Saturday night, said the mystery surrounding the murder had largely been unravelled.
According to officials involved in the investigation, information and evidence gathered so far have made it largely clear that Apratim may have been killed over his iPhone.
District police media officer and Additional Superintendent of Police Md Lutfar Rahman told Prothom Alo on Saturday night, “We will present details of the entire incident at the press briefing at noon on Sunday. We request everyone to wait until then.”
Apratim went missing on Friday afternoon after leaving his rented home in the Gandhamati area of Kotbari in Cumilla. He had taken his mother’s iPhone with him, telling her that he was going out to take photographs with his friends. He was a Class Seven student at Border Guard Public School.
Apratim’s body was recovered around noon on Saturday from an isolated forest in Lalmai Hill in Sananda village of Bijoypur Union under Sadar Dakshin Upazila. There were marks of injury on his head.
After Apratim went missing, the university authorities and law enforcement agencies reviewed CCTV footage from various locations. In one of the recordings, a teenager was seen with Apratim near the university’s main gate. Police detained the teenager.
Based on information obtained during questioning, police raided his home and recovered the phone on Saturday night.
Another teenager was detained in connection with the incident on Saturday. Law enforcement officials said he was being questioned.
