Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ruled out a full withdrawal from Gaza, even as Israel and Hamas prepare for indirect talks in Egypt on a new U.S. plan aimed at ending the conflict and securing the release of hostages.
Netanyahu said Saturday that he has sent a delegation to Egypt “to finalize technical details,” adding that “our goal is to contain these negotiations to a time frame of a few days.”
He indicated that while Israel aims to facilitate the release of hostages, the military will continue to hold territories it controls in Gaza, and Hamas is expected to be disarmed in the plan’s second phase, either diplomatically or through military action.
Hamas said it has accepted some elements of the U.S. proposal, prompting former U.S. President Donald Trump to welcome the statement but warn that “Hamas must move quickly, or else all bets will be off.”
Trump also ordered Israel to stop bombing Gaza, leading to reports of a temporary easing of Israeli strikes, though hospital officials reported at least 22 deaths, including women and children, on Saturday.
Israel’s army said it has moved to a defensive-only posture in Gaza, refraining from active strikes while preparing for the first phase of the U.S. plan.
Nevertheless, an Israeli strike on Gaza City’s Tuffah neighborhood killed at least 17 people and injured 25 others, according to Al-Ahli hospital director Fadel Naim, while Shifa Hospital reported five additional deaths.
The Monday talks in Egypt, mediated by the U.S. and Egypt, aim to pave the way for the release of hostages from Gaza and Palestinians held in Israeli detention.
A senior Egyptian official said U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff will lead the American negotiating team, with discussions including maps showing expected Israeli withdrawals from specific areas and preparations for a comprehensive Palestinian dialogue to unify their position on Gaza’s future.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Gaza’s second-largest militant group, confirmed it accepted Hamas’ response to the U.S. plan after initially rejecting it.
