The United States has carried out airstrikes on military facilities on Iran’s Kharg Island, a strategic hub for the country’s oil exports, as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate amid the ongoing war involving Iran, Israel and US forces, according to media reports.
US President Donald Trump said American forces targeted military installations on the island, which plays a crucial role in Iran’s oil export network. While the strikes hit air defence systems, a naval base and airport facilities, the oil infrastructure itself was not targeted, though Trump warned it could be attacked if Iran continues to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Kharg Island handles the vast majority of Iran’s oil exports, making it one of the most critical energy facilities in the country and a key factor in global oil markets.
The conflict has intensified since late February, when a broader regional war erupted after US-Israeli strikes on Iran triggered retaliatory missile and drone attacks by Tehran and its allies across the region.
Meanwhile, violence linked to the conflict continued elsewhere. Iraqi security officials reported that a missile struck a helipad inside the US Embassy compound in Baghdad, underscoring the rising risk to American facilities in the region.
The confrontation has also raised fears of disruptions to global energy supplies, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil normally passes.
Iran has warned that any attacks on its oil facilities could trigger retaliatory strikes against energy infrastructure linked to the United States and its allies in the Gulf, further heightening concerns over global oil markets and regional stability.
