US President Donald Trump has publicly connected his disappointment over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize to his renewed insistence that the United States should take control of Greenland.
In a message to Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, obtained by US media, Trump wrote that he no longer feels “an obligation to think purely of peace” after being overlooked for the prestigious award, although he added that peace would “always be predominant.”
“Considering your country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace… but can now think about what is good and proper for the US,” Trump wrote. He added, “The world is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland.”
Prime Minister Støre confirmed he received the text message on Sunday, following prior communications with Trump and Finland’s President Alexander Stubb about proposed tariff increases connected to the Greenland dispute. Støre stressed that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by an independent committee, not the Norwegian government.
Trump has repeatedly voiced his desire to purchase Greenland from Denmark, citing national security concerns. The Arctic island, sparsely populated but rich in resources, is strategically positioned for early warning missile systems and monitoring maritime activity. He has not ruled out using military means to secure Greenland, a provocative stance given Denmark’s NATO membership.
The controversial remarks come amid heightened attention to the Arctic region and ongoing US interest in expanding its geopolitical influence.
