The tremor was felt across the Chugoku region, with the epicentre located in Shimane Prefecture. Shortly after the main quake, several aftershocks were also reported in the area.
Japanese authorities confirmed that there is no risk of a tsunami following the earthquake. However, bullet train services on one route have been temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure.
So far, no reports of casualties or damage have been received.
Japan is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries, accounting for nearly 20 percent of all earthquakes worldwide measuring magnitude 6 or higher.
