Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence has opened up about the differences she’s noticed between working with male and female directors, saying some male filmmakers tend to “over-direct” to assert control rather than improve a film.

In an interview Lawrence said, “There have been some times when I’ve worked with male directors where there’s this need to constantly feel like they’re directing the movie. And it’s not even really getting anything done. It’s just annoying. When I think auteur, my mind kind of goes to controlling and…what’s that word? Neurotic!”

She contrasted that with her experience on Die My Love, directed by Lynne Ramsay, describing Ramsay’s approach as calm and collaborative.

Lynne was the opposite. She really built this world and made sure that we were all on the same page, through music and conversations and the atmosphere and the set,” Lawrence said.

The actress, who stars opposite Robert Pattinson in the film, praised both her co-star and Ramsay for creating a safe and open environment during filming.

Die My Love opened this weekend on 1,983 screens and is expected to earn around $2.7 million over its first three days. Mubi acquired domestic and multiple foreign rights to the film for $24 million.
