Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed Combined Students’ Alliance has made history in the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) election by securing a landslide victory, winning 20 out of 23 posts.

Only three positions—general secretary (GS), sports secretary, and science and technology secretary—went to other candidates.

Chief Election Commissioner Prof F Nazrul Islam announced the final results around 8:30 am on Friday.

Mustakur Rahman Jahid, the candidate from the Combined Students’ Alliance, won the vice president (VP) post by securing the highest number of votes.

Salahuddin Ammar, a familiar face on the Rajshahi University campus and former coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Movement, was elected general secretary (GS).

Shibir-backed candidate Salman Sabbir narrowly defeated JSD-backed Jahin Biswas Esha to win the assistant general secretary (AGS) post.

Meanwhile, national footballer and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD)-backed candidate Nargis Khatun won the post of sports secretary—the only winning candidate from the JCD-supported panel. The science and technology secretary post went to independent candidate Tofayel Ahmed Tofa.

In other posts, Shibir-backed candidates from the alliance swept the results. Zahid Hasan Zwoha was elected cultural secretary, Rakibul Islam as assistant cultural secretary, Abu Sayeed Nayeem as assistant sports secretary, Saeeda Hafsa as women affairs secretary, and Samia Jannat as assistant women affairs secretary.

Nazmus Saqib and Sifat Abu Saleh were elected information and research secretary and assistant secretary respectively, while Mujahidul Islam became media and publication secretary. His assistants, Asadullah Hil Galib and Mujahidul Islam Sayem, were also elected.

Imran Laskar won the debate and literature secretary post, with Nayon Mursalin elected as assistant. Abdullah Al Masud and Masuma Islam Momo were elected environment and social welfare secretary and assistant secretary respectively.

Executive member posts went to Dip, Sujon Chandra, Imjiauul Ali, and Khalid Hasan.

Earlier, voting took place from 9 am to 4 pm on Thursday at 17 centres across nine academic buildings, where students from 17 residential halls cast their ballots.

Amid allegations and counter-allegations throughout the day, counting began at 8:30 pm at the university’s Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium, starting with results from the female dormitories around 10:30 pm.

A total of 247 candidates contested 23 posts in RUCSU from 10 panels, alongside 597 candidates for 15 posts in hall unions and 58 contestants for 5 Senate representative posts. Eighteen candidates vied for the VP post, 13 for GS, and 16 for AGS.

The total number of registered voters was 28,901—of them 11,305 female and 17,596 male students. The overall voter turnout stood at 69.83 percent, with a 63.24 percent turnout in the six female halls.
