BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that there is nothing to complain about to foreigners as the people of Bangladesh will decide the country’s future.

He added that the European Union (EU) has expressed its expectation of transparency in the upcoming national election and will send observers to monitor the polls.

Talking to reporters after a meeting with the EU ambassador at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan on Wednesday morning, Khosru said, “The EU delegation has conveyed their hope that the next election will be held in a transparent manner. They will send observers to oversee the process.”

The meeting, held around 11am, was attended by BNP leaders including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who led the delegation, along with EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Charles Whiteley and his team.

Khosru further said that discussions were held about the upcoming 13th national election and the possible handover of responsibilities to the Election Commission ahead of the polls.

The EU has maintained strong trade relations with Bangladesh, and they have also emphasised the importance of institutionalising democracy so that every institution can function independently,” he added.

From the BNP side, the meeting was attended by Standing Committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, as well as Organising Secretary and member of the Chairperson’s Foreign Affairs Advisory Committee, Shama Obaid.

According to party sources, the discussions covered Bangladesh’s current political situation, the forthcoming national election, human rights conditions, and issues surrounding the restoration of democracy.
