Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed deep concern and strong condemnation over the reported desecration of the Holy Quran by a student of North South University, urging all to remain calm and place their trust in the legal and judicial process instead of taking the law into their own hands.
In a statement issued on Monday, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said that on October 4, North South University student Apurba Paul committed a “heinous and audacious act” by desecrating the Holy Quran, an incident that has deeply hurt and angered the country’s devout Muslims as well as peace-loving citizens.
This desecration is not merely an affront to religious sentiment but an act of rebellion against Allah and a direct attack on Islam, he said.
He noted that the people of Bangladesh have long upheld interfaith harmony, tolerance, and mutual respect. The recent peaceful celebration of the Durga Puja festival stands as evidence of that communal harmony, the statement added.
Jamaat, however, warned that such a deplorable act of desecration could be part of a conspiracy aimed at disrupting peace and stability in the country.
The matter must be investigated thoroughly at the state level,” Parwar said, questioning the role of the North South University authorities in handling the incident.
He said the administration should have promptly taken firm action to ensure such acts are never repeated.
He also cautioned against any attempt to portray the accused as a “mentally ill” person to shield him from justice, saying such efforts would be a mockery of the rule of law and a form of complicity in the crime.
Jamaat demanded that those responsible be brought under the purview of law and handed exemplary punishment to deter future incidents.
Parwar urged the public to demonstrate restraint and express their protests through peaceful and lawful means, calling on everyone to have faith in the legal process and not to be provoked into taking justice into their own hands.
