The arson of an Alif Transport bus in Mirpur was allegedly carried out due to extortion, as the perpetrators reportedly did not receive the demanded money.
Major Shahid Ahsan of the 11th Signal Battalion, 86 Independent Signal Brigade of the Bangladesh Army, said that for the past three to four months, Pichchi Pintu from Mohammadpur and his group had been demanding extortion money from Alif Transport.
The incident occurred after the bus company refused to pay," he said.
He added that operations are ongoing to recover the weapons and arrest those involved in the case.
Details of the incident emerged during a press briefing after the army detained two individuals.
Although one of the suspects, who fired at the bus, mentioned a conflict with a killer named Abbas, the army has not yet confirmed the claim.
CCTV footage from Friday morning showed four individuals stopping an Alif Transport bus near pillar 266 of the Metro Rail, forcing all passengers off, setting the bus on fire, and firing two rounds.
Within 24 hours, the army arrested two suspects, including Nesar. However, it was reported that the other detained individual, Dipu, was not present at the scene.
Nesar, one of the arrested, claimed that the incident was not related to extortion, but rather stemmed from anger over a promised job that was not provided.
