Barrister Jahrat Adib Chowdhury, chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been elected a member of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) from the Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group.
She was elected Tuesday at the 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania, securing a majority of the votes. Representatives of the 37 member countries of the IPU's Asia-Pacific Group took part in the election.
The statement described the result as another significant achievement for Bangladesh under the present BNP-led government, coming after the country's election to the presidency of the 81st UN General Assembly.
It said the outcome reflects the international community's continued trust in the government's commitment to strengthening parliamentary democracy and is expected to further enhance Bangladesh's voice and representation in the international parliamentary arena.
The IPU is the global organisation of national parliaments, promoting democratic governance, peace, sustainable development and parliamentary diplomacy and cooperation.
A Bangladesh parliamentary delegation, led by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, is currently attending the 153rd IPU Assembly.
