People from all walks of life gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar on Monday to pay their last respects to eminent leftist thinker, researcher and writer Badruddin Umar, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 94.
His body was brought to the Shaheed Minar in the morning, where the homage ceremony began at 10:30am. Leaders of various political, social, cultural and professional organisations, as well as ordinary citizens, placed flowers on his coffin.
Advisers of the interim government Sharmin S Murshid and Farida Akhter were among those who paid tribute at the Shaheed Minar.
After the tribute ceremony, his body will be taken to Dhaka University’s central mosque. Following the funeral prayers after Zohr, he will be laid to rest at Jurain graveyard beside his parents’ graves.
Badruddin Umar, a towering figure in Bangladesh’s leftist movement and most recently president of the National Liberation Council, died on Sunday at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Shyamoli.
