At least 12 people, including three children and two women, were killed and several others injured when a passenger bus collided with a train at a rail crossing in Comilla’s Sadar Dakshin Upazila early Sunday.
The accident took place at the Paduar Bazar rail crossing around 3:00 AM, according to local police and witnesses.
Police sources confirmed that the fatalities occurred on the spot when the bus, attempting to cross the tracks, was struck by an oncoming train. The impact left the bus severely mangled, trapping many passengers inside.
"We have recovered 12 bodies so far, including two women and three children. The number of casualties may rise as several of the injured are in critical condition," a senior police official at the scene stated.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been established. Authorities are currently working to identify the victims and notify their families.
Rail Communication Suspended
Following the collision, rail communication between the capital city, Dhaka, and the port city, Chattogram, has been completely suspended. Railway authorities have arrived at the site to begin salvage operations and clear the tracks.
It remains unclear whether the accident was caused by a signaling error or if the level crossing was unmanned at the time of the crash.
Rescue Operations Underway
Local residents joined fire service personnel and police in a massive rescue effort shortly after the crash. The injured were rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital, where they are currently receiving emergency treatment.
Railway officials have stated that a probe committee will likely be formed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
