The High Court has dismissed a petition challenging the candidature of BNP’s Dhaka-11 candidate, Dr M A Qayyum, paving the way for him to contest the upcoming election.
The bench, comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Asif Hasan, on Tuesday directly rejected the petition filed by Nahid Islam, coordinator of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) and candidate of the 11-party alliance for the same constituency, seeking a stay on Qayyum’s nomination.
Following the ruling, Qayyum’s lawyers confirmed that there is no legal obstacle for him to participate in the election.
Nahid Islam’s lawyer, Advocate Zahidul Islam Musa, said the party would approach the Appellate Division in response to the verdict.
Dr Qayyum has previously denied allegations regarding foreign citizenship and ownership of property abroad, describing them as baseless and misleading.
