Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer of Dr Shafiqur Rahman has stated that no one will be allowed to engage in extortion if the party comes to power.

He made the remarks on Sunday (25 January) while addressing Jamaat’s election rally in Jatrabari, Dhaka.

From the morning, leaders and activists from various units of Dhaka Metropolitan South Jamaat arrived at Jatrabari—the site of the July movement—through separate processions.

As the day progressed, the venue, one of the city’s major entry points, became packed with supporters.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman arrived at the rally stage around 12 noon. The area erupted with slogans as he waved to the crowd, greeting them warmly.

In his keynote speech, Dr Shafiqur Rahman urged the public to ensure a ‘Yes’ victory in the upcoming referendum, saying that the country should not witness fascism again. “Those who fail to understand the voice of the people will be made to realise it on 12 February,” he said.

He added, “‘Yes’ means freedom, while ‘No’ means slavery. To uproot fascism, a ‘Yes’ victory in the referendum is essential.”

The Jamaat Ameer also condemned extortion, saying, “Extortion is worse than begging. Jamaat will not engage in it, nor will it allow anyone else to do so.”

Emphasising the importance of women’s participation in nation-building, Dr Shafiqur Rahman said that Jamaat would ensure women are fully involved in the country’s development. If the party forms the government, women will be provided with secure employment opportunities, and safety will be guaranteed both at home and in public spaces. Evening bus services will also be introduced for working women.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman further accused some of attempting unethical means out of fear of losing. Issuing a warning, he stated that any attempt at vote engineering would be met with fierce resistance.
