Tarique Rahman has assumed office as the new Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), a position he had been holding in an acting capacity.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the party’s Standing Committee held on Friday night at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan, the capital.

According to a press release issued by the party, the post of BNP Chairman fell vacant following the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. In line with the party constitution, a meeting of the Standing Committee was convened to address the situation.

At the meeting, the Standing Committee unanimously decided to formally appoint Tarique Rahman as the Chairman of the party.
