A pall of grief descended on Rajshahi University on Wednesday after the body of a female student was recovered from a hostel room, sending shockwaves through the campus community.

Lamisa Nawrin Pushpita, a first-year student of the Department of Islamic History and Culture, was found dead in her room at a student hostel in the Binodpur area of Rajshahi city. She hailed from Jhenaidah district.

Police said the recovery was made in the afternoon. According to Motihar Police Station officer-in-charge Abdul Kalam Azad, the student was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf tied around her neck.

After receiving information, police broke open the door of the room and rushed her to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where physicians declared her dead.

Her body was later sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy as part of the legal procedures, the OC added.

The tragic incident has left fellow students shocked and deeply saddened. A sense of silence and disbelief spread across the hostel and the wider campus as news of the death emerged, with many struggling to comprehend the sudden loss of a young life.

RU Proctor Prof Mahbubur Rahman said the victim’s father has been informed of the incident.

He added that the body will be handed over to the family after the completion of all legal formalities.
