The janaza (funeral prayer) of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia will be held on Wednesday at 2:00pm at the National Parliament House premises and Manik Mia Avenue.
The janaza will be led by the Khatib of the National Mosque. She will be laid to rest beside the grave of her late husband, martyred President Ziaur Rahman, with full state honours.
The information was disclosed in a statement issued by the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing on Tuesday.
According to the statement, public entry will remain restricted during the burial ceremony, which will be held with state honours. For security reasons, people have been requested not to carry bags or heavy items at the janaza and burial venues.
Earlier in the day, following a meeting at the Secretariat on law and order and arrangements for Khaleda Zia’s janaza and burial, Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said her body would be taken from Evercare Hospital to the National Parliament House on Wednesday morning.
He said special security measures would be enforced on both sides of the road during the procession, adding that the body would be transported and the janaza and burial conducted with full state honours.
The Press Secretary also said more than 10,000 members of law enforcement agencies would be deployed to ensure security, with the army stationed at selected locations.
Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia passed away at 6:00am on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital. She was 80.
At the time of her death, her eldest son and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, along with other close family members, were present at the hospital.
