Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed deep sorrow at the death of former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, who passed away in Dhaka earlier in the day.

In a condolence message, Modi extended his “sincerest condolences” to Khaleda Zia’s family and to the people of Bangladesh, praying for strength for them to bear what he described as a tragic loss.

“May the Almighty grant her family the fortitude to bear this tragic loss,” the Indian Prime Minister said.

Modi said Khaleda Zia, as the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, made important contributions to the country’s development and played a significant role in strengthening India-Bangladesh relations.

“Her contributions towards the development of Bangladesh, as well as India-Bangladesh relations, will always be remembered,” he said.

Recalling his personal interaction with the late BNP chief, Modi said he remembered their warm meeting in Dhaka in 2015.

“We hope that her vision and legacy will continue to guide our partnership,” the Indian Prime Minister added.

He concluded his message by praying for eternal peace for her departed soul.

“May her soul rest in peace,” Modi said.
