Zaima Rahman, daughter of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, has shared a personal note about her pet cat ‘Jebu’ following growing public curiosity since the family’s return to Bangladesh.
In a Facebook post on Monday morning, Zaima reflected on her family’s bond with Jebu, describing the animal as an integral part of their household and highlighting the responsibility and compassion involved in caring for a living being.
“A caring for an animal, any animal, is a great responsibility. After all, it is a life, a creation of Allah,” she wrote.
Zaima said Jebu joined their family as a kitten and gradually became deeply attached to every member of the household. She recalled how her parents would often ask about the cat before asking about her, noting Jebu’s close companionship with her mother during gardening and walks, and her habit of curling up on her father’s lap during work calls.
Zaima also wrote about the emotional support Jebu provided her, saying the cat appeared to sense her moods and offered comfort in her own way.
Addressing the challenges of relocating with a pet, she said Jebu had recently travelled across continents into a completely new environment — an experience she described as far more unsettling for the animal than for humans.
“Through Jebu, our family has learned a great deal about patience, compassion for creatures big and small, and the beauty of loving and caring for one another even without a shared language,” she added.
She concluded by saying that growing up with animals had taught her family important life lessons, noting that caring for another living being often reveals more about oneself than expected.
Zaima also shared a light-hearted detail about Jebu, revealing that the cat does not meow. Instead, she chirps softly when happy, groans in mild protest when carried without consent, and yowls aggressively at cats she dislikes.
Tarique Rahman returned to Dhaka on December 25 after 17 years in self-imposed exile, accompanied by his wife, daughter Zaima Rahman, and their pet cat Jebu. Since then, social media users have shown notable interest in the cat, prompting Zaima’s first public post about her.
