Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury is set to be appointed as the 26th Chief Justice of Bangladesh, replacing incumbent Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed.
Justice Chowdhury is scheduled to take oath on December 28, while a gazette notification regarding his appointment is expected to be issued within this week.
According to the Constitution, the current Chief Justice, Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed, will retire on December 27 upon reaching the age limit of 67.
Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury enrolled as a lawyer in the judge court in 1985 and at the High Court Division of the Supreme Court in 1987. On August 27, 2003, he was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court Division, and his appointment was made permanent two years later.
On August 12, 2024, President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed him as a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
Justice Chowdhury completed his LLB (Honours) and LLM degrees from the University of Dhaka and later earned another master’s degree in International Law from the United Kingdom.
