Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is scheduled to return to the country on Thursday, 25 December, and will register as a voter on Saturday, 27 December, according to Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the party’s Standing Committee.

Salahuddin made the announcement to the media after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on Monday.

He said, “The BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman will return to the country next Thursday and will become a voter on the following Saturday.”

Salahuddin said BNP has sent a letter to the Election Commission requesting relaxation of certain conditions related to nomination papers. Discussions also covered legal case information required for submitting nomination papers.

“Many of us are not even aware of who has how many cases. We have requested that certified copies not be demanded,” he noted.

Regarding law and order, Salahuddin emphasised that the government is responsible for maintaining the situation. “The government will cooperate with the Election Commission as it directs. We hope that the law and order situation will gradually improve,” he said.
