New Age Editor and Editors’ Council President Nurul Kabir was harassed by an agitated group of people around 3:00am on Thursday amid tensions following the death of Osman Hadi.
Sources said a mob set fire to the head offices of The Daily Star and Prothom Alo late at night, leaving several journalists trapped inside the buildings. Nurul Kabir went there in an attempt to help rescue the journalists, during which he was harassed by members of the mob.
A video circulating on social media shows several people attempting to assault Nurul Kabir, while members of the law enforcement agencies are seen trying to restrain them.
In the footage, some individuals are heard shouting slogans accusing him of being affiliated with the Awami League.
Apart from serving as editor of New Age, Nurul Kabir is currently the president of the Editors’ Council.
Meanwhile, another group of agitated people vandalised and set fire to the remnants of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence at Dhanmondi 32.
Some of them also attacked the cultural institution Chhayanaut and carried out arson there.
At the time of filing this report, agitated groups remained positioned in the Karwan Bazar and Dhanmondi areas until 4:00am, facing off against law enforcement personnel.
