Domestic aide Ayesha killed a woman and her daughter in Mohammadpur over anger and confrontation stemming from a theft of money, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said on Thursday.

At a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre, Additional Police Commissioner Md Nazrul Islam said Ayesha had stolen Tk 2,000 from the house the day before the murder. When Laila Afroze confronted her over the theft and warned of informing police, Ayesha murdered both Laila and her daughter Nafisa.

He said Ayesha later looted a laptop and other valuables and fled the house wearing Nafisa’s school uniform. She had also stolen Tk 2 lakh earlier from her sister’s house.

Police arrested Ayesha, the prime suspect, from Jhalakathi on Wednesday. Investigators said after committing the murders, she informed her husband Rabbi, who then helped her flee.

On Monday morning, police recovered the bloodied bodies of Laila Afroze and her daughter Nafisa Lawal Binte Ajiya from a residential building on Shahjahan Road in Mohammadpur.

Ayesha had been one of the prime suspects in the case. CCTV footage showed her entering the apartment in a burqa at 7:52am and leaving around 9:30am wearing Nafisa’s school dress and carrying a bag.

Later that night, Laila Afroze’s husband, Azizul Islam, filed a case with Mohammadpur Police Station over the double murder.
