Dhaka has sent a letter to Delhi seeking the repatriation of Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who were sentenced to death for their involvement in the July killings.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain on Sunday said the formal letter requesting Hasina’s return was sent to India on Friday following the verdict of the International Crimes Tribunal.
He added that the letter was directly sent to Delhi two days ago. However, officials at the Indian Embassy in Dhaka said by evening that they had not yet received any copy of such a letter or email.
Earlier, on Monday, the International Crimes Tribunal delivered its verdict against Sheikh Hasina, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and former IGP and state witness Abdullah Al Mamun.
Sheikh Hasina received the death penalty for three charges, while Kamal was also sentenced to death. The former IGP was given a five-year jail term for his cooperation with the judicial process and revealing the truth.
Touhid Hossain had earlier said during a briefing at the Foreign Ministry that a letter would be sent to India either late at night or the following morning to repatriate Hasina and Kamal.
