At least ten people have been killed in Dhaka and several other districts after a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck on Friday morning, causing walls, railings and building parts to collapse in different areas.
In Dhaka’s Kosaituli area of Bangshal, a five-storey building’s railing collapsed onto the street, killing three pedestrians. Two of the victims were a father and son — Haji Abdul Rahim, 47, and his 13-year-old son, Meherab Hossain Rimon.
Rafi, a student of the 52nd batch of Sir Salimullah Medical College, also died in the incident while out shopping with his mother, Nusrat, who remains in critical condition.
Bangshal Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge confirmed the casualties.
In Mugda’s Madina Bagh area, a security guard named Maksud, 50, died after the railing of an under-construction building collapsed during the tremor.
In Narayanganj’s Rupganj, a one-year-old child, Fatema, was killed when a tin-shed house wall collapsed. Her mother, Kulsum Begum, and a neighbour, Jesmin Begum, were injured. Rupganj Police Station’s OC confirmed the incident.
In Narsingdi Sadar’s Gabtali area, a 10-year-old boy, Omar, died after the roof of their house collapsed amid the quake. His father Delwar Hossain Uzzal, who was critically injured, later died while undergoing treatment.
According to Omar’s uncle Zakir Hossain, Delwar was trying to flee the house with his three children when the sunshade suddenly collapsed on them. Locals rescued the victims and took them to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital before they were transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where Omar was declared dead.Delwar died later in care. DMCH Police Camp’s OC confirmed the deaths.
Meanwhile, in Palash upazila’s Malita village, a 75-year-old man, Kazem Ali Bhuiyan, died after the walls of his mud house collapsed.
Two others — Nasir Uddin, 65, of Kaziarchar Nayapara, and Forkan Mia, 45, of Joynagar union’s Azkitala village — also lost their lives in separate quake-related collapses in Narsingdi.
More updates are expected as authorities continue assessing the damage.
