Akhter Hossen, member secretary of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), has urged the government to swiftly execute the death sentence handed down to ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in the case filed over crimes against humanity committed during last year’s July mass uprising.
In a video message on Monday afternoon, Akhter said the souls of those killed would find peace not merely through the announcement of the verdict but through its execution.A
We are waiting, and we call upon the government to execute Sheikh Hasina’s death sentence without delay,” he said.
Akhter said the capital punishment handed to Hasina is “the rightful justice,” adding that carrying out the order would ensure accountability for her alleged mass killings and crimes against humanity.
He also urged the Indian government not to provide refuge to Hasina.
Hasina is a killer; she killed people and oppressed them. We call on the Indian government not to shelter her but to hand her over to Bangladesh’s justice system,” he said.
Accusing Hasina of using the entire state machinery to carry out killings, Akhter said her execution would stand as a global precedent, adding that the verdict proves she bears full responsibility for ordering the use of lethal weapons against unarmed civilians.
Expecting trials for what he described as Hasina’s remaining offences, he said, “Only a few charges have been tried. Her crimes are far more extensive. All of them must be brought to justice.”
Akhter further said that ensuring Hasina’s punishment would prevent any future ruler in the world from turning into a mass killer.
