A group of unemployed graduates with disabilities have been observing a hunger strike at Dhaka University’s Raju Sculpture, demanding special recruitment measures and other facilities through an executive order from the Chief Adviser.
On Sunday, they were seen continuing their hunger strike in front of the sculpture, where they have been demonstrating for the past 22 days.
The protesters alleged that police repeatedly stopped them at Shahbagh whenever they attempted to march toward the Chief Adviser’s residence, Jamuna, to press home their demands.
Criticising the Social Welfare Adviser, the demonstrators said he has shown little sincerity in addressing the legitimate rights of persons with disabilities, forcing them to continue their protest unto death.
Their five-point demand includes reserving a 2% quota for persons with disabilities in first and second-class government jobs, and 5% in third and fourth-class posts. They also called for raising the age limit for government job applications for persons with disabilities to 35 years.
The protesters vowed not to leave the Raju Sculpture premises until their demands are met.
