Hamza Choudhury has emerged as the new poster boy of Bangladeshi football. The English Premier League star has already played four matches for Bangladesh, scoring two goals — one of them a stunning free-kick in the most recent game.
On October 9, Hamza scored a spectacular goal from a free-kick against Hong Kong. Even though he was not the official captain, he led the team from the front. In fact, Hamza has been seen guiding his teammates throughout every match he has played.
In that match against Hong Kong, regular captain Jamal Bhuyan was not in the starting lineup. It also remains uncertain whether Jamal will be included in the squad for Tuesday’s match against the same opponent.
Amid such circumstances, many football fans in Bangladesh are eager to see Hamza wearing the captain’s armband. A glance through social media reflects that sentiment clearly.
National team head coach Javier Cabrera also wants to see the Leicester City midfielder as captain.
I’ve seen Hamza guiding his teammates both on and off the pitch, which is a very positive sign. If Hamza becomes captain, it will further strengthen the leadership line in the team. I definitely want to see him as captain,” Cabrera said.
Hamza’s teammates have no objection either. They say they feel comfortable playing under his leadership.
Midfielder Sohel Rana said, “Whoever becomes captain represents the country and works for the team’s success. We believe if Hamza becomes captain, none of us will have any problem with that.”
The coach also confirmed that there are no injury concerns or other issues in the squad at the moment. Bangladesh will enter the next match with the highest expectations for victory.
