Bangladesh is struggling with a worsening dengue outbreak, as four more deaths were reported in the 24 hours leading up to Thursday morning, pushing this year’s total fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease to 224, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
During the same period, 781 new patients were hospitalised with viral fever, bringing the cumulative number of dengue cases this year to 52,885. The recent fatalities were reported in Dhaka South and North City Corporations, highlighting the ongoing impact of the outbreak in the capital.
Currently, 2,452 patients are receiving treatment across hospitals nationwide, underscoring the pressure on healthcare facilities.
Last year, dengue claimed 575 lives, with more than 101,000 reported cases and over 100,000 recoveries recorded by the DGHS. While the numbers this year have not yet reached last year’s peak, the continued daily rise in infections and hospitalisations signals a serious public health concern.
Health authorities continue to urge residents to take preventive measures, including eliminating standing water, using mosquito repellents, and seeking prompt medical attention if symptoms appear.
As Bangladesh faces the seasonal surge in dengue cases, experts stress the importance of early intervention and community-level vigilance to prevent further loss of life.
