The deep depression formed over the Bay of Bengal has now extended up to Bangladesh’s northern region, triggering rainfall across most parts of the country, including the capital Dhaka.
According to the Meteorological Department, rainfall is likely to continue throughout Friday in different parts of the country, with heavy to very heavy showers in some areas. Northern districts are expected to witness more rainfall than other regions.
The impact of the deep depression has spread to Bihar, West Bengal and Odisha in India, as well as Bangladesh’s northern region. As a result, rain may persist throughout the day with little chance of sunshine,” said meteorologist Md Shahinul Islam.
Meanwhile, four seaports have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal No. 3. Fishermen have been asked to proceed with caution as the sea remains rough.
Shahinul Islam further said that Rajshahi, Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions may experience heavier rainfall. Other parts of the country will also see rain, which may continue for at least the next two days in scattered form.
Since early Friday, heavy rain has lashed Dhaka. Around 8am, the capital experienced a prolonged spell of showers under an overcast sky.
The highest rainfall in the last 24 hours was recorded in Monpura upazila of Bhola district, at 84 millimetres.
Meteorologists noted that the monsoon usually remains active until mid-October, during which low pressure or deep depressions often enhance rainfall activity.
The current deep depression developed over the west-central Bay of Bengal. Initially, it had more impact on coastal areas before extending its influence to northern Bangladesh.
