Bangladesh has reported two more deaths from dengue in the past 24 hours, raising this year’s death toll from the mosquito-borne disease to 200, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Alongside the fatalities, 490 more patients were hospitalised with viral fever, bringing the total number of dengue cases in the country to 47,832 so far this year. The latest deaths occurred in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), the DGHS said.

September alone saw 76 deaths and 15,866 dengue cases, reflecting a worrying rise in infections as the country heads into the late monsoon season. Currently, 2,359 patients are receiving treatment across hospitals nationwide.

New cases have been reported across several divisions: 138 in Barishal (outside city corporation), 60 in Chattogram (outside city corporation), 100 in Dhaka (outside city corporation), 78 in Dhaka North City Corporation, 64 in Dhaka South City Corporation, 28 in Mymensingh (outside city corporation), and 22 in Rangpur (outside city corporation).

Last year, dengue claimed 575 lives, while 101,214 cases were recorded and 100,040 patients recovered. The deadliest year on record remains 2023, when 1,705 people lost their lives to the disease.

Health authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and take preventive measures against mosquito breeding, particularly in densely populated urban areas.
